A Seven Medical Aesthetics Guide to Choosing the Right Treatment for Your Lips
When it comes to enhancing the lips, two of the most popular treatments at our RN-founded practice are Lip Filler (lip augmentation using hyaluronic acid) and the Lip Flip (a subtle enhancement using neurotoxin). Both treatments focus on creating a more defined, attractive lip shape, but they work very differently and deliver different types of results.
Unsure which option is best for you?
This guide breaks it all down.
What Is Lip Filler? (HA Lip Augmentation)

Lip filler uses hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring molecule in the body, to add structure, volume, hydration, and shape to the lips.
What Lip Filler Can Do
- Add volume to top and/or bottom lips
- Create a more defined lip border
- Correct asymmetry
- Hydrate lips for a soft, plump appearance
- Enhance projection and pout
- Smooth vertical lip lines
Best For
Patients who want fuller, shapelier lips or visible structural enhancement. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, lip augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures for achieving natural-looking fullness.
How Long It Lasts
9-12 months, depending on metabolism and filler choice.
Downtime
Minimal swelling and tenderness for 24-72 hours.
Most patients resume normal activities right away.
What Is a Lip Flip? (Neurotoxin Treatment)

A Lip Flip uses a small amount of neurotoxin (such as Botox/Dysport) placed strategically around the upper lip muscles. Instead of adding volume, it relaxes the muscle, allowing the top lip to gently roll outward, giving the appearance of a slightly fuller lip.
What a Lip Flip Can Do
- Make the top lip look subtly fuller
- Reduce a “gummy smile”
- Improve lip shape when smiling
- Enhance the Cupid’s bow
- Give a delicate, natural-looking pout
Best For
Patients who want a soft, natural look without adding actual volume.
How Long It Lasts
8-12 weeks.
Downtime
Very minimal.
Some patients resume normal activities immediately.
Key Differences: Lip Filler vs. Lip Flip
1. Volume vs. Shape
- Lip Filler: Adds actual volume and structure.
- Lip Flip: Creates the illusion of a fuller upper lip without adding size.
2. Duration
- Filler: Long-lasting (9-12 months).
- Lip Flip: Short-term (2-3 months).
3. Ideal Candidates
- Lip Filler: Great for patients wanting noticeable enhancement or specific shaping.
- Lip Flip: Perfect for subtle enhancement, first-timers, or patients cautious about filler.
4. Customization
- Filler: Very customizable, with multiple techniques, products, and results.
- Lip Flip: More subtle, less adjustable.
5. Price
Lip flips are less expensive since they use fewer units of neurotoxin.
Fillers are a larger investment but last significantly longer.
Can You Combine a Lip Flip with Lip Filler?
Absolutely!
For many patients, the best results come from pairing the two. Filler provides shape and volume, while a Lip Flip creates a soft, relaxed upper lip and enhanced pout, delivering beautiful, balanced results that don’t announce themselves.
We start conservative with both treatments.
You can always add more at your two-week follow-up, but we can’t easily take it away.
